New AJNR Feature: Weekly Question and Poll

Starting Monday, August 31, when you visit AJNR.ORG you will find our new weekly activity: question and poll.  Every Monday we will post a new question and our visitors can vote on an answer.  These questions will refer to controversial aspects of neuroimaging, many which we face on a daily basis.  Once you click on the answer, you should be able to see how the poll is progressing.  One week later, we will post the results of the poll for all to see.  We will create a repository of these questions/polls which hopefully will give us an idea as to … Continue reading >>

Aunt Mickey (They Look the Same until You Undress Them). Subarachnoid Hemorrhage or Something Else?

A young female presented to an outside hospital with headache of one day duration. An MR brain study was done and interpreted as showing acute subarachnoid hemorrhage in the right temporal/occipital region.  The patient was transferred to our hospital for treatment and before performing a lumbar puncture a head CT was done.  The CT was interpreted as normal.  CSF was obtained and was also normal.

The Neurological Manifestations of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunodeficiency Syndromes

The Neurological Manifestations of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunodeficiency Syndromes. L.L. Barton and N.R. Friedman, eds. Totowa, NJ: Humana Press; 2008, 421 pages, 21 illustrations, $139.00.

Although not a book with wide appeal for neuroradiologists, this broad but somewhat superficial review of The Neurological Manifestations of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunodeficiency Syndromes may be a suitable reference in the libraries of larger radiology departments or imaging groups who encounter significant numbers of pediatric patients. There are, however, a great number of disconcerting facts with which one can impress others at social gatherings. (Did you know that “4.7% of adults in … Continue reading >>

Annotated bibliography #3

The Use of Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenic Protein in Posterior Interbody Fusions of the Lumbar Spine, J Spinal Disord Tech 2009;22:315–320.  Anterior, posterolateral and transforaminal approaches have shown good outcomes with this stuff, and this paper adds posterior interbody fusion to the list.

Clinical Usefulness of CT-myelogram Comparing With the MRI in Degenerative Cervical Spinal Disorders.  Is CTM Still Useful for Primary Diagnostic Tool?  J Spinal Disord Tech 2009;22:353–357  No surprise here, the answer is yes.

Cavernous malformations of the basal ganglia and thalamus, Neurosurgery 65:7–19, 2009.  Nice review of the literature, showing a 2.8-4.1% annual bleed rate.  10% of … Continue reading >>

Intracranial Pressure and Brain Monitoring XIII: Mechanisms and Treatment (Acta Neurochirurgica Supplementum), Supplement 102

G.T. Manley, C. Hemphill, and S. Stiver, eds. New York: Springer Wien; 2009, 448 pages, 150 illustrations, $359.00.

This 440-page volume from Springer, which is published as a supplement to Acta Neurochirurgica, consists of the proceedings of the ICP13 congress held in San Francisco in 2007. Both Springer and the authors should be congratulated for the outstanding presentation and readability of the book, which is enhanced by numerous figures and graphics. The quality of the submissions is high, but the reader’s interest for neuroradiology may be quite limited (eg, the section on cerebrovascular reactivity and Part 6 on brain … Continue reading >>

Placement of Covered Stents for the Treatment of Direct Carotid Cavernous Fistulas • C. Wang, X. Xie, C. You, C. Zhang, M. Cheng, M. He, H. Sun, and B. Mao
Endovascular treatment of direct carotid cavernous fistulas has been done mostly with balloons (outside of the United States) and coils. With the introduction of flexible covered stents, deployment in vessel curvatures has become possible. In this article, the authors review their experience in the treatment of 10 direct carotid cavernous fistulas with covered stents and provide follow-up (mean, 18 months). Treatments were successful in 9 patients; endoleaks were … Continue reading >>
