Embolization of Brain Arteriovenous Malformations for Cure 4,180 views
The editorial comment in the AJNR of Jan 09 by Jayaraman and Cloft is worthy of careful scrutiny, I believe. Although in my personal experience with Onyx and NBCA, final cure rates of brain AVMs from ...

Educational Presentation: CNS and Head and Neck Teratomas
Here is the next educational presentation. This was also done by some of my previous fellows. The topic is a bit unusual, but I think that the presentation is very good and should help our readers.… Continue reading >>

7.0 Tesla MRI: Brain Atlas: In Vivo Atlas with Cryomacrotome Correlation
7.0 Tesla MRI: Brain Atlas: In Vivo Atlas with Cryomacrotome Correlation. Zang-Hee Cho (Editor). Springer 2010, 557 pages, 500 illustrations, $299.00.
This is probably the largest book in dimensions (15.1 inches x 12.1 inches) ever reviewed for the AJNR. When it arrived, it reminded me of a Rand McNally World Atlas that one places on a book stand. That initial observation aside, this 557-page atlas directly compares whole brain (filling a whole page) cryomaccrotome images (on the left hand page) with the corresponding high detail post vivo, 7 Telsa, T2 weighted MR images (on the right hand page). … Continue reading >>

Significant Temporal Evolution of Diffusion Anisotropy for Evaluating Early Response to Radiosurgery in Patients with Vestibular Schwannoma: Findings from Functional Diffusion Maps • Y.-C. Lin, C.-C. Wang, Y.-Y. Wai, Y.-L. Wan, S.-H. Ng, Y.-L. Chen, H.-L Liu, and J.-J. Wang
It has been shown that immediately after radiation or chemotherapy, brain tumors (particularly metastases) may have changes in apparent diffusion coefficient, suggesting an alteration of their cellular arrangements that may be related to a better prognosis. Here, the authors evaluated this same concept as it applies to vestibular schwannomas treated with stereotactic radiosurgery. Six patients underwent diffusion tensor … Continue reading >>
The Handbook of the Medical Image Perception and Techniques
The Handbook of the Medical Image Perception and Techniques. Ehsan Samei and Elizabeth Krupinski (Editors). Cambridge 2010, 436 pages, 170 illustrations, $169.00.
For those interested in delving into issues related to image perception, this Handbook serves a useful purpose because it address topics which radiologists seldom consider. There are six sections of this book: Historical reflections and theoretical foundations; Science of image perception; perception metrics; Decision support and CADs; Optimization of image systems; Future of medical image perception. Twenty authors have contributed to these chapters.
With the increased importance of imaging informatics (IT) and the establishing of sections of IT … Continue reading >>

Imaging of Orthopaedic Fixation Devices and Prostheses
Imaging of Orthopaedic Fixation Devices and Prostheses. Thomas Berquist, M.D. (Author). Wolters Kluwer | Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2008, 736 pages, 1953 illustrations, $210.00.
Orthopedic hardware has always been a bit of a stumbling block for the practicing radiologist. When it comes to dictating post fixation films, most of us find ourselves mumbling something we hope is sufficiently innocuous to keep us from looking, well, foolish. The resultant vague reports are not of much use to the orthopedic surgeon and they are a potential disservice to the patient. Furthermore, dissatisfied referring orthopedic surgeons frustrated by useless and potentially misleading reports … Continue reading >>
