We report a case of a 57-year-old patient with a history of intracranial hypertension (visual impairment, headaches, and papillary edema) due to a meningioma exclusively located inside the superior sagittal sinus (SSS). The lesion was not detected on a nonenhanced brain CT. MR imaging revealed a centimetric round homogeneous lesion, hyperintense on T2-weighted images, intensely and homogeneously enhanced after gadolinium injection on T1-weighted sequences with fat … Continue reading >>

Educational Presentation: Diffuse Cerebral Angiopathies, A Review
Proliferative Angiopathies (NXPowerLite)
Here is another educational presentation. We presented this electronic exhibit at this years ASNR meeting Boston. Although we are all familiar with moyamoya as a type of angiopathy, proliferative and hemorrhagic angiopathies have been recently described and are less well known. Differentiating among them is important because clinical presentation, treatment, and prognosis are different for each.… Continue reading >>
One Neuroradiology Fellow Position Open for 2011 at UNC
The Neuroradiology division in the UNC Department of Radiology comprises five diagnostic attending neuroradiologists, three fellows and three associated neurointerventional specialists from the Division of Interventional Neuroradiology. We have five clinical 1.5T and one 3.0T MR units and a second 3.0T unit to be operational October 2010 in the vecinity of the Emergency Department. Our upcoming dedicated outpatient facility (to open January 2011) will house two MR units and one CT scanner.
We also currently have both a dedicated full-body 3.0T in our research facilities. There are seven CT scanners (including a dual source and a 128-slice). A flat plate CT “Xoran” … Continue reading >>

Low back and neck pain are leading causes of doctor visits and loss of work in the USA. The cost of back pain exceeds a hundred billion dollars in the USA alone. Many of these patients often proceed to surgery. It is now believed that surgery may offer no long term advantage, compared to more conservative treatment options; this is for the vast majority of patients … Continue reading >>

Surgery for Low Back Pain
Szpalski M, Gunzburg R, Rydevik BL, Le Huec JC, Mayer HM, eds. Surgery for Low Back Pain. Springer 2010, 285 pages, 80 illustrations, $139.00.
As all those radiologists who work closely with spine surgeons (neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons) know full well, the surgical options for treating low back pain are numerous and the approaches/devices are seemingly growing at a bewildering rate. Everyday we see new cages, spacers, interpinous implants, sponge filled growth factors, plates, and screws to say nothing of the varying approaches to interbody fusions (anterior, lateral, posterior, transforamenal). The list of options is, in fact, so long … Continue reading >>
Case of the Week
I would like to thank Dr Castillo for providing me the opportunity to be the section editor for the AJNR Case-of-the-Week (COW). It has been about 4 months since I assumed this responsibility and, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank colleagues from all over the world toward their contribution to the COW.
It has been about 2 – 3 years since COW was introduced by Dr Castillo. It has grown to be a tremendously popular site (sometimes receiving up to 10,000 views per month). With the hope of adding to the educational content of COW, Dr. … Continue reading >>
Dural Cavernous Sinus Fistulas: Diagnosis and Endovascular Therapy
Benndorf G. Dural Cavernous Sinus Fistulas: Diagnosis and Endovascular Therapy. Series: Medical Radiology. Subseries: Diagnostic Imaging. Springer 2010, 326 pages, 742 illustrations, $219.00.
This is an extremely well-illustrated and comprehensive collection of the existing literature regarding dural cavernous sinus fistulas (CCFs). It was a real pleasure to read, and I would recommend it to neuro-interventionalists and neuro-ophthalmologists of all levels of training and experience. It would be a great resource for diagnostic neuroradiologists, but its focus on the clinical features and endovascular treatment of these complex lesions probably move it from the stack of required reading.
There … Continue reading >>
